As soon as the twins had vanished into the house, Stonehurst spoke up from behind Aimee, his words holding a sardonic edge. "It's all right, you know. I wasn't going to gobble them up."

She whirled to face him, her hands on her hips. "I should hope not," she said with asperity. "After all, they meant no offense. They're just naturally curious."

"I am well aware of that. And whatever you may think, I don't make a habit of raking small children over the coals for my entertainment."

Aimee bit her lip at his less than subtle rebuke. She knew that, of course. But she certainly wasn't going to admit that she had been far more worried that her nephews' probing would cause him further pain than she had been at the possibility that he would lash out at them for their inquisitiveness. "You are right, my lord, and I apologize. It's just that you never seemed to want to talk about your...injury in the past. Has that changed?"

He stiffened visibly, then pivoted on a booted heel to stand with his back to her and his head bowed. When he addressed her again after another short span of silence, it was in a coolly remote voice that left no room for discussion. "No. It hasn't changed."

Telling herself that wasn't disappointment she felt washing over her, Aimee lifted her chin. "Then perhaps we should move on to a different subject."

He glanced back at her over his shoulder, the scarred corner of his mouth quirked upward in derision. "Excellent proposal. By all means, let us don our masks of social civility. What shall we discuss? The weather of late? Your father's health? Yours?"

His mocking comments pricked at her temper, though she managed to rein it in with a supreme effort of will. "Pleasant, quite well, and just fine, thank you."

The viscount gave a harsh bark of laughter at Aimee's succinct response and spun about. The next thing she knew, he had crossed the distance that separated them in a few long, ground-eating strides, coming to a stop before her. This close, she could smell the heady blend of his cologne. As always, it served to throw her off balance, leaving her scrambling to hold on to her wits.

"My, how polite we are." His unsettling stare never wavering from her face, her captured her hand in his and skimmed his finger over the stinging red mark the kitten had raked across her knuckles earlier. "You needn't prevaricate with me. It doesn't happen very often, but I can tell when you are angry. Those tiger eyes of yours flash quite charmingly and that sweet little mouth puckers up like a prune. What's wrong, Mouse?"

That did it. Drawing herself up, she leveled him with a furious glower. "Don't call me Mouse," she hissed, tugging at her hand in a vain attempt to free herself.

"Ah, it seems you have grown a set of claws in my absence. You know, I can remember a time when you used to like it when I called you that."

"That was long ago. I've changed."

"Not so long ago. But perhaps you are right and Mouse no longer suits you. I find that I like Kitten just as well. It's most appropriate in the circumstances, don't you think?"

Aimee bristled and opened her mouth, fully prepared to deliver the set-down he so richly deserved. But before she could say a thing, he raised a hand and touched her cheek in a feather-light caress, his thumb just brushing her lower lip. It was like being struck by lightning, for every muscle in her body jolted at the unexpected contact, and the scathing reprimand froze on the tip of her tongue.

"Spit and scratch all you want, little Kitten," he murmured, his mouth curving almost seductively as his head bent toward her, "but I know you've missed me..."
